Nationality or Practicality?

Nationality or Practicality?

English, the universal language may just be the second major language in the Philippines. But most Filipinos will not be able to communicate clearly without uttering a single English word. We use English language more often in our everyday activity than our mother tongue. So, we may say that being fluent in English is better than being able to master our mother tongue. We can use it to get a better job. It is also “cool” to speak a foreign language fluently.

On the contrary, mastery in our mother tongue shows nationality and patriotism. Some may say that we should master our native language first before learning foreign ones. We could say that it is fun being quaint, knowing deep native tongue words that others don’t even know.

In my opinion, it is better if we have fluency in English, even though it is not our own. I love my country but, I’m a practical person and I can say that fluency in English can help me in the future than mastery of my mother tongue.
